Read a Book, Write an Essay

The Tutoring Method

Inspired by the Richard F. Miniter essay “A World Without Schoolteachers“, Read A Book, Write An Essay: The Tutoring Method (AKA “readabuke”) advocates the tutoring model of education, aided by ereaders and the vast number of public domain books available to everyone for free through Project Gutenberg and many similar sites.

[T]hat’s all it takes. Hand out the reading assignment, be available, or have someone else available to examine the essay they write and perhaps send them back to the same material book for another go or two on the same subject. Because tutoring doesn’t teach a discrete body of knowledge as much as it does a skill we don’t hear much about anymore: scholarship.

The project’s founder, D. Jason Fleming, will also occasionally make a previously-unavailable book available, first through Amazon, then (once a certain number have been sold) freely through the Internet Archive, FeedBooks, and elsewhere.
